JOB DESCRIPTION

Certified Lifeguard

Reports To: Aquatics Director

Department: Aquatics

FLSA Classification: Variable, non-exempt OR part-time, non-exempt OR full-time non-exempt

Pay Rate (hourly): $12.00 – $14.00/hr

Job Summary: The Certified Lifeguard, under the supervision of the Aquatics and Wellness Director, shares in the JCC’s commitment to the highest quality of programs while maintaining the safety of all patrons and fellow staff in addition to excellent customer service.  All Certified Lifeguards are the central point of connection between the JCC and all aquatics program participants.  All Certified Lifeguards supports the mission of the JCC by ensuring that every individual using the JCC pool receives a warm welcome while also ensuring that a safe and secure environment is maintained at all times both in the water and out.

Principal Responsibilities:

Tier 1 – Certified lifeguards ($12.00 variable) are a VERY integral part of the JCC Aquatics Facility.  Primary duty is to maintain the safety of all patrons in and out of the water. Being alert, knowledgeable, and approachable to all members, guests, and fellow co-workers is a must in providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all. 

  • Attentive and active monitoring of all member activity in and out of pool 
  • Maintain clean and proper working order for all emergency equipment, pool equipment, bathrooms, pool furniture, pool, pool deck surface, and pool grounds guided by Pool Deck Manager and detailed check sheet for opening, closing, and weekly facility duties.   
  • Stay informed about programs and schedules in order to respond to Aquatics program or facility inquiries; welcome and help to orient new and prospective Aquatics program participants 
  • Help to troubleshoot and resolve member questions/concerns/special circumstances. 
  • Stay informed of party/pool rental schedules and assist customers to ensure satisfaction 
  • Assist with enforcing all JCC safety and security policies and procedures 
  • Assist as needed as Asst. Swim Instructor 
  • Dressed in company approved clothing 
  • Must enjoy working with all ages 

Tier 2 – Certified lifeguard ($12.50 part-time) – meet previous tier requirements and:

  • Set, part time schedule, working less than 30 hours a week 

Tier 3 – Certified lifeguard ($13.00 part-time) – meet previous tier requirements and:

  • Cross training at reception desk and as assistant swim instructor as assigned by Director. See job description for Receptionist and Asst. Swim Instructor 

Tier 4 – Certified lifeguard ($13.50 – $14.00 full-time) – meet previous tier requirements and:

  • Set, Full-time schedule working 30-40 hours a week

Agency Responsibilities 

  • Maintaining the daily safety of all members & guests in and out of the water
  • Maintaining facility and equipment safety and cleanliness
  • Attend staff meetings 
  • Maintain and enforce agency policies and procedures

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Ability to work with all age groups
  • Knowledge of Jewish culture, values, and traditions (not required)  
  • Engaging, Responsive, Professional 

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Current High school students and/or High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Experience:

  • Preferred 1 year experience of lifeguarding

Certifications:

  • Must maintain and be current with  Lifeguarding with CPR/AED from accredited agencies:  American Red Cross, American Heart Association, Starguard Elite 

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be willing to work outdoors in seasonal heat (100F+) or cold inclement weather
  • Required to know how to swim, and can swim a minimum of 300 yards
  • Prolonged periods of standing, sitting, bending, squatting, walking and climbing up minimal heights
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs
