SUMMARY:Jewish Film Discussion Series: Bulgarian Rhapsody
DESCRIPTION:Bulgarian Rhapsody\n\n\nSummer of 1943. The Jews of Greater Bulgaria must adhere to the laws of Germany. SUMMARY:Jewish Film Discussion Series: 24 Days
DESCRIPTION:After dinner with his family\, Ilan Halimi gets a call from a beautiful girl who had approached him at work and makes plans to meet her for coffee. Ilan didn’t suspect a thing. He was 23 and had his whole life ahead of him. The next time Ilan’s family heard from him was through a cryptic online message from kidnappers demanding ransom in exchange for their son’s life. Based on a book co-written by the victim’s mother\, Ruth Halimi\, Director Alexandre Arcady’s cinematic adaptation offers a harrowing view into this ordeal: from his kidnapping and torture at the hands of the Gang of Barbarians\, to the nearly 700 phone calls\, insults\, and threats received by his family. Meanwhile the Parisian police fail to recognize the anti-Semitic hatred of his abductors. \nDirected by Alexandre Arcady\nFrance\, 2015\nDrama\nFrench (with English subtitles)\n110 minutes \nFilms are available on the screening site ChaiFlicks here. Let JCC colleague James Sokol zoom you away for an “armchair adventure” to NYC to meet and “tour” with our terrific\, local guide\, a Broadway history expert who shares interesting stories\, rarely seen photographs & videos to see Broadway’s past and present merge before their eyes. \nThe events take place online over four Mondays: February 1\, 8\, 15 & 22\,  2:00-3:30 PM  \nAct I: Broadway’s Beginnings (Feb 1)\nExplore the Broadway theaters at the southern end of the Broadway theatre district from 41st Street to 44th Street. Journey back in time with our guide to Broadway’s early years full of roof garden theaters\, tap shoes\, and theatrical con artists. Learn the true difference between a Broadway theater and an Off-Broadway theater and revel in the secrets hidden in plain sight in some of Broadway’s most famous theaters. Tour-goers will hear how a show is created from the first rehearsal to opening night and all of the craziness in between. And\, of course\, we’ll explore the spirits that may still be lurking in the shadows backstage with a few unbelievable ghost stories. \nAct II: The Shuberts & Beyond (Feb 8)\nExplore the Broadway theaters in the central Theater District from 44th Street to 46th Street. As Times Square transformed from an area full of manure and horse stables to one of the busiest tourist destinations in the world\, a battle for Broadway was brewing between a group of theatrical titans and three scrappy brothers with the last name of Shubert. Set against the backdrop of Broadway’s most famous theaters\, tour-goers will hear about the Shubert Brothers who monopolized Broadway against all odds with the help of an awkwardly named architect. Add in the true origins of the Tony Awards and rarely heard stories from famous musicals ranging from Oklahoma! to Hamilton and walk away with a new appreciation for just how far Broadway has come over the past 100 years. \nAct III: “Hamilton”: The Real NYC Sites (Feb 15)\nCelebrate Presidents’ Day with an exploration of one of the US’ Founding Fathers. For those obsessed with or wanting to learn more about the real settings of Hamilton: An American Musical\, follow our guide on Alexander Hamilton’s sidewalks and explore “the revolution happening in New York” in the 1700’s. In addition to seeing the historical sites\, hear stories and secrets about the creation of the record-breaking musical. After culminating at the gravesite of Alexander & Eliza Hamilton\, tour guest may walk away even more obsessed with the show than ever before! Be sure to join us so that you\, too\, will be “in the room where it happens!” \nAct IV: Hippies\, Discos & Dogs\, Oh My! (Feb 22)\nExplore the Broadway theaters at the northern end of the Broadway theatre district from 47th Street to 54th Street. Weave among the original facades on the sidewalks north of Times Square and hear how Broadway transformed with the first million dollar show and the introduction of rock musicals. Learn how a dog named Sandy would change one Tony Award winner’s life – and Broadway’s canine future – while little orphan Annie belted “Tomorrow” in front of thousands. And with some of Broadway’s longest running shows\, from Hair! to Wicked\, housed within these blocks\, our guide will bring to light the backstage quirks and secrets that are rarely heard. \nTo “meet” James Sokol and hear more about our alliance travel series\, click here.  \nTickets & Notes:\nFull Series Tickets ($50): Series of 4-visits (equals $12.50/visit). \nActs II\, III & IV Ticket ($37.50) – This specially created ticket is for those who went on the Act I tour during last September’s Broadway series and would now like to take the remaining walks. \nGive-Us-A-Try Ticket ($12.50): Check us out by giving our first “trip” (Feb 1) a try. Single tickets are not available to subsequent trips and cannot be credited toward series purchase. \nAll Tickets: …are 1) per device\, not per person on Zoom\, and 2) non-refundable & non-exchangeable. \nFor details & tickets\, click here. \n

SUMMARY:Virtual Jewish Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Jewish book club (separate from the Israeli book club )  meets online monthly on the second Tuesday at 1 PM to discuss selected books by Jewish authors. \nThis month’s book is The Third Daughter by Talia Carner. Carefully researched and meticulously novelized\, Carner tells the story of Batya\, the third of many daughters of a struggling Russian milkman. Batya’s two older sisters have already gone astray — one married a revolutionary and the other\, a gentile. Existence is uncertain\, and pogroms regularly decimate entire shtetls. Echoes of “Fiddler on the Roof” are unavoidable\, but the parallels stop when Batya\, at fourteen\, catches the eye of what seems to be a rich\, eligible man from “America.” Smooth and redolent with cologne\, he promises Batya’s father that he will marry her when she is sixteen — meanwhile keeping her safe with his sister. The patriarch imagines a gilded world in which his daughter will ride in carriages and dine on fine china. Little does he know that there are will be no marriages or carriages. Instead\, young Batya (and thousands like her) will be raped within days of kissing her mameh and tateh goodbye\, and that her suitor’s “sister” runs an Argentinian whorehouse in which Batya will be enslaved. \nIf you are interested in joining the book club\, please email tami@jcc-asheville.org.

Noah’s music is  prayerful and full of uplifting messages for this time of uncertainty.  \nTickets are $20 per adult and $30 for a family ticket. RSVP to info@jccavldev.wpengine.com to register. \n \nHere’s what people are saying about Noah Aronson: \n“Noah Aronson\, perhaps the most sought after Jewish musician of our time\, once again graced our bimah this past Friday. Every time we are fortunate enough to experience prayer through his music\, his spirit\, his soul\, our community soars to new heights of prayer. Our Temple B’nai Or family knows by now to not miss his appearances. His accessible and soulful melodies have inspired our congregation and have made it into our regular worship practice. His teachings on the bimah involve and excite all who are present and lastly\, his soft and beautiful voice moved us all so deeply. We are so grateful for all we have experienced and can’t wait for the next opportunity to have him back.”\n– Cantor Galit Dadoun-Cohen\, B’nai Or\, Morristown\, NJ \n“Noah brought us a perfectly thought through program\, impeccably rehearsed\, and effortlessly presented to the participants at Mifgash Musicale at Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati\, Ohio. For me\, personally\, the groove of tasteful rock music in the sacred setting of the Chapel was particularly moving. Not to be overlooked was an impromptu tribute to Stevie Wonder\, improvised after the formal  program concluded\, and that\, in itself\, shook the roof off the house.” \n-Dr. Alan Mason President\, Guild of Temple Musicians
