The JCC is awarding $13,500 in need-based scholarships this year to families with children participating in Shalom Children’s Center, JCC Kids afterschool, Camp Ruach, and the AJCC swim team. We received more requests this year than usual, and the scholarship committee made the decision to approve these for the benefit of families in our community. Read a recipient’s stories below, then please make your year-end scholarship donation to help the JCC provide these much needed scholarships into the new year.
Because of our JCC scholarship, my daughter is being raised Jewish.
“Before my daughter was at the JCC, I didn’t have any childcare. She started there when she was two, so before that I was having to piece together someone to watch her while I worked.
One of the things that pulled me into the JCC was the music, the way Penny [White] leads it for the kids, and the staff being really welcoming and great with the kids.
After receiving a scholarship from the JCC, I was able to have my daughter in childcare, which I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford. I was able to work more, and she was so happy to be around other kids, make friends, and do all the activities the J offers.
We’re Jewish, but prior to her coming to the JCC, I had come away from Judaism. I wasn’t planning to raise my daughter Jewish. But honestly, the songs and the culture tugged at my heart, and I started getting involved in the Jewish community because of that. We also eventually started going to one of the temples here, and we’re really involved in Asheville’s Jewish community now—and my daughter is really being brought up with the Jewish faith.
I’m so grateful that I was able to receive a scholarship, and it really is what allowed my daughter to have an experience at the JCC and be so involved in the Jewish community. She’s ten now, and we’re still involved in the JCC eight years after she started at Shalom Children’s Center. Now she goes to afterschool, and the J is still the place where she feels at home.”
