Jewish Heritage and Rebirth in Prague and the Czech Republic

December 19, 2016 By Marketing

Take part in a journey through Prague and the Czech Republic from June 12-June 29, 2017!  The tour focuses on a larger-than-life project undertaken by the government and people of the present-day Czech Republic. As part of this 10 Hvezd (Star) project, the Federation of Jewish Communities in the Czech Republic received the largest grant for the preservation of Jewish monuments in the Czech Lands during the entire post-war period. The project has enabled the reconstruction, restoration, and preservation of 15 important historical buildings in 10 towns in Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. This undertaking included not only synagogues but also the rabbinical houses and Jewish schools (cheders) as part of the restoration. Also taking place are permanent exhibitions that, along with other temporary programs (lectures, concerts, screenings, theater performances, etc.), inform visitors about Jewish history and Judaism in a unique manner and setting.

The trip will allow participants to learn about all of the programs surrounding the 10 Hved Project. They will also be able to pay tribute to a people lost from their centuries-long, historically vibrant community in the Czech lands. Participants will have many opportunities to visit the many historic towns and countrysides that are idyllic and fascinating. They will visit the beautiful region bordering Austria called the “Czech Napa Valley”.

To find out more about this trip, including how you can join in on the adventure, contact Prof. Barbara Weitz at weitzb@fiu.edu
