Job Summary: The Associate Director of Aquatics supports the Aquatics Director in the day-to-day operation of the JCC’s aquatics facility. This role is responsible for staff scheduling, program coordination, safety compliance, and facility oversight, and serves as the lead point of contact for aquatics staff and members in the Aquatics Director’s absence.
Principal Responsibilities
- Staff Scheduling & Coverage
- Create and distribute schedules for lifeguard and front desk staff, ensuring appropriate coverage to meet program needs and proper pool operations
- Coordinate coverage for callouts, PTO, and sick time
- Cover the front desk and guard stand when necessary
- Program & Facility Management
- Schedule and manage birthday party rentals and other assigned programs
- Oversee pool registrations and cancellations
- Oversee general maintenance and upkeep of the aquatics facility
- Maintain records of pool concession inventory and place orders as needed
- Assist in managing vendor and service contractor relationships
- Place cleaning supply orders
- Staff Supervision & Training
- Support the hiring, training, and supervision of pool staff and freelance instructors
- Schedule and document in-service trainings
- Maintain aquatics staff files and ensure training compliance
- Assist with staff trainings and meetings as needed
- Safety & Compliance
- Maintain knowledge of and adherence to all pool health and safety standards
- Develop, implement, and enforce rules and regulations to ensure pool safety
- Member Relations
- Ensure excellent customer service is being provided at all times
- Respond to member concerns and ideas in a timely and positive manner
- Act as lead point of contact for aquatics staff and members when the Aquatics Director is not present
Required Skills & Abilities
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with staff, members, and vendors
- Ability to lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced, safety-sensitive environment
- Proficiency in scheduling and basic record-keeping
- Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations
Qualifications
- Education
- Associates degree or higher in Recreation, Physical Education, Sports Management, or a related field; or a minimum of three years of experience in the aquatics field in lieu of degree.
- Experience
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred
- Experience in aquatics programming and facility operations preferred
- Certifications
- Current Lifeguard Certification required
- Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) Certification required
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certification required
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) preferred
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to stand, walk, and remain alert for extended periods of time
- Must be able to perform lifeguarding duties, including swimming and physical rescues, when necessary
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to handle exposure to pool chemicals, humidity, and varying indoor/outdoor temperatures

This position will require evening, weekend, and some holiday availability based on program and facility needs.
